Toyota 4Runner is a compact and later mid-sized sports utility vehicle, produced by Toyota in Japan and sold all over the world since 1984. In Japan, it is called Toyota Hilux Surf and it withdrew from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV, just a Toyota pickup covered with a fiberglass shell, but since then this model has undergone major independent development, becoming a crossover between compact and medium SUVs.

The fifth-generation 4Runner was unveiled at the Texas State Fair on September 24, 2009. It has 3 decoration levels, 2 of which were previously available. Basic SR5 trims and top limited trims are available as two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The new test drive version only has four-wheel drive. SR5 and the trial version 4WDs will accept a part-time four-wheel drive system, while the limited edition will have a full-time four-wheel drive. All models will be equipped with A-TRAC. The new Trail version provides Toyota's dynamic suspension system and crawl control system, which were previously only used on Toyota premium vehicles, and a rear-locking differential like the previous Trail package.
The 4.0-liter V6 adds dual VVT-i, improves horsepower, torque and fuel economy, and becomes the standard configuration of all models. The 2010 2.7-liter i7.2-liter model has been discontinued. The previous-generation 4.7-liter V8 engine was not brought to the fifth-generation 4Runner. 4Runner is manufactured on the same platform as the FJ cruiser.
