The Ford Ranger is a nameplate that has been used in several models sold by Ford. As the successor to the Ford Courier produced by Mazda, the Ranger was launched in 1983 as the first compact pickup produced by Ford. In North America, the Ranger is under the F-150 of the Ford light truck series and is the smallest Ford pickup. In markets where Ford does not sell F-series/super trucks, the Ranger is usually the only pickup that Ford sells.
In the Americas, this model series has now entered the fourth generation, originating from the third-generation Ranger that was launched globally since 2011. Originally developed by Ford Australia, the current Ford Ranger T6 is the first version sold as a mid-size pickup.
Before being used on small trucks, Ford Motor Company used the Ranger nameplate on three different models. The name first appeared in 1958 as the Edsel Ranger; as a division of the base trim sedan, the Ranger will be produced until the 1960 model year. After Edsel's death, the name Ranger returned to the Ford department as a decorative bag for F series trucks in 1965, and was used on Ford Bronco in 1972; Ranger had been a mid-to-high-end decorative level until 1981.
After the 1981 model year, Ford withdrew the Ranger trim line from light trucks, mainly to welcome the 1983 compact pickup.
